Telefónica Presents its work at IEE-QCNC24, Japan

Juan Morales, R&D Engineer at Telefónica, presented “Current Status, Gaps, and Future Directions in Quantum Key Distribution Standards: Implications for Industry,”

July 3rd, 2024 – Telefónica had the honor of presenting the publication titled “Current Status, Gaps, and Future Directions in Quantum Key Distribution Standards: Implications for Industry” at the IEEE International Conference on Quantum Computers, Networks, and Communications (QCNC 2024) in Kanazawa, Japan.

The publication provides: 

  • A concise overview of the key standardization bodies involved in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).
  • An analysis of the main standards from ETSI and ITU-T, highlighting their strengths and collaborative potential.
  • Identification of significant gaps in current QKD standards.
  • Recommendations for future steps in advancing the standardization of QKD technologies.

Collaborative Efforts Behind the Research

The work was a result of collaboration between Jesús Folgueira, Rafael Canto Palancar, Antonio Pastor, Diego R. Lopez (Telefónica GCTIO), Vicente Martín Ayuso, and Juan Pedro Brito Méndez (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid). In addition to this presentation, Telefónica GCTIO colleagues Antonio Melgar and Diego R. Lopez also presented important contributions at QCNC 2024, further demonstrating the groundbreaking work taking place at Telefónica, and part of the QUARTER project.

Telefónica continues to lead in the field of QKD standardization, showcasing its commitment to advancing quantum communications for the industry.
